Is Corten Steel Rust Proof?

Corten steels rust in a similar way, but the result is a stable layer of rust called the patina that sticks to the base metal and is much less porous. This naturally-formed patina keeps coming back when it is exposed to the weather. It forms a protective barrier that stops oxygen, moisture, and pollutants from getting in.

Does this mean that Corten steel won’t rust?

No, it does not. Corten steel is left to rust so that a protective coating called patina can form on it. Even though this makes corten steel much less likely to rust than other steels, this does NOT mean that it will never rust.

Corten Steel Patina vs. Rust

Rust and patina are both types of surface corrosion. The patina forms when the steel oxidizes, and it keeps the deeper, more destructive rust from getting to the steel. Rust, on the other hand, is caused by wear and tear. It starts to chip away at the surface of the metal, leaving holes and sharp edges.

Corten steel starts out silver like regular steel, but over time, as the patina builds up, it turns an orange-brown color. The rate at which the patina forms depends on the steel’s environment and other things, like humidity and how close it is to water. From what we’ve seen, the patina forms faster when the steel goes through more weather cycles. Also, the patina forms faster on cold-rolled materials (18 GA sheets or thinner) than on hot-rolled materials (16 GA sheets or thicker).

Many people will think that the orange-brown patina that corten steel develops is rust, but in reality, the patina is doing its job to keep the steel from rusting anymore. That’s why corten steel is beautiful and useful.

Patina appreciation

Many builders, designers, and architects have fallen in love with the rustic orange-brown color and texture of weathering steel, as well as the practical benefits it offers. Since Central Steel Service was started more than 40 years ago, the number of people who use weathering steel has only grown. Weathering steel was once mostly used for industrial purposes, but now they are used for a wide range of things like bridges, roofs, siding, landscape elements, sculptures, and more.
